YANGON嚗� Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has called on the people to work together with the government in restoring Yangon city's glory of "the most beautiful country in the eastern region"嚗� expressing the government's commitment to upgrade the former capital city嚗� Myanmar News Agency reported Sunday.


Speaking at the opening of the Yadana Hninsi housing complex Saturday嚗� the new government's first public housing development project in Yangon嚗� Aung San Suu Kyi urged the people and private businessmen to assist in implementing the project which she called a public-private partnership model.


The project嚗� which started on June 1嚗� is a model project for future housing complexes in Dagon Seikkan township with its five 18-storey buildings.


The Yangon region government has adopted a five-year plan from 2016 to 2010 to build 180嚗�000 apartments嚗� of them 8嚗�000 will be built in two years from 2016 to 2017 in Yangon region and the apartments will be sold at low cost on an installment basis嚗� according to the Construction Ministry.


Meanwhile嚗� the Yangon region government is drawing a south-west expansion plan with the city to establish seven new satellite towns嚗� namely Yangon Eastern嚗� Yangon South-West嚗� Thanlyin嚗� Dala嚗� Htantabin嚗� Hmawby and Helgu townships.


The Greater Yangon Urban Development Project 2040 is to be implemented in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).


The existing Yangon city has a population of over 6 million and an area of 795 square-km.




CANBERRA嚗� Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday named Susan Keifel as the country's first female Chief Justice of the High Court.


Turnbull told a press conference that Keifel嚗� 62嚗� would take over the role in January when current Chief Justice Robert French formally retires from the role.


"The Governor-General has accepted the advice to accept Susan Keifel as the next Chief Justice of the High Court - the 13th Chief Justice of Australia and first woman to hold that role嚗�" Turnbull said.


Keifel currently presides as senior judge of the High Court嚗� and Turnbull praised her resilience from a young age嚗� describing her journey to become the nation's highest legal officer as an "inspiration."


"She left school at 15. She began her working life as a legal secretary and studied for her completion of high school qualifications part-time嚗�" Turnbull said.


Keifel studied law part-time through the Barristers Admission Board and was admitted to the bar in 1975.


Turnbull also took the opportunity to announce that Justice James Edelman would be taking Keifel's place as of the seven presiding High Court judges嚗� describing him as "one of the most outstanding legal minds of his generation."


Keifel will become the naiton's first female Chief Justice in the role's 115 year history.




CANBERRA嚗� June 7 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Tuesday announced plans for the first ever online leaders' debate嚗� to be held on social media website Facebook and hosted by News Corp's News.au.


The Prime Minister has challenged Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to join him online嚗� as it would enable "millions" of Australians to track and follow the debate.


He said Australians would be able to use laptop and smartphones to access the debate嚗� in what he described as the first step towards an "innovative" Australia.


"(I) have reached an agreement with嚗� subject to Mr Shorten participation嚗� Facebook and News.au to hold the first online leaders' debate嚗�" Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday.


"We've had a Sky News people's forum debate嚗� the traditional Press Club debate嚗� it is traditional to have three debates嚗� so let's have the third one in an innovative way and that every Australian can participate in.


"We are in 2016嚗� this is the 21st century and this is the time of innovation. This is the most exciting time to be an Australian and to participate in an election debate in the media of our time."


Turnbull said hosting a third debate on Sky News would shut to door to millions of Australians without pay TV services嚗� and this new format would allow the majority of the voting population to take in the leaders' points.


Shorten is yet to accept the prime minister's offer嚗� but is likely to agree to the terms.


There is no date set for the online debate嚗� but Turnbull is pushing for it to be held early next week.
